ARTICLE 65. Does plantar fasciitis heal with rest?

"Rest can relieve the pain for a few days. What it usually doesn't do is teach the plantar fascia to better handle loads when you start walking again."

When plantar fasciitis occurs, the first advice many people receive is very simple.

"Rest."

It makes sense.

If something hurts...

We stop using it.

However, the plantar fascia is part of a system designed to bear load.

And that completely changes the way we understand its recovery.

What biomechanics says

The tissues of the locomotor system respond to loads.

Neither excess is good.

Nor is complete absence of stimulation usually the solution.

The plantar fascia needs time to recover.

But it also needs to gradually receive loads again to adapt.

Today we know that many degenerative processes improve when pain control is combined with a gradual exposure to movement.

That's why the goal is not usually to eliminate all activity.

But to find the right amount.

What I see every day in consultation

Many patients come in after several weeks of rest.

The pain has decreased.

But as soon as they start walking normally...

The discomfort reappears.

Not because resting was a mistake.

But because the tissue was still not prepared to handle the usual load.

In consultation, we try precisely that.

Finding the balance between protecting the tissue and continuing to stimulate it.

The most common error

Confusing resting with stopping moving.

They are very different things.

Temporarily reducing activities that clearly increase pain may be necessary.

But remaining completely inactive for weeks usually promotes the loss of physical capacity.

And, when activity is suddenly resumed, the fascia receives more load than it can tolerate.

What you can do

  • Temporarily reduce the activities that clearly aggravate the pain.

  • Keep the movement as much as possible within some tolerable levels.

  • Follow a structured exercise program by a professional when indicated.

  • Avoid returning suddenly to the same level of activity prior to the injury.

  • Seek a biomechanical assessment to identify what factors have contributed to the onset of the injury.

Conclusion

Plantar fasciitis usually does not heal solely with rest.

It recovers when the tissue can once again tolerate the loads that daily life demands.

As a podiatrist, my goal is not for the patient to rest forever.

It is to help them walk with confidence, knowing that their foot is ready to do so..
