"It has been years since I walked barefoot"

A patient told me a phrase that made me think.

—Do you know? I think it has been more than ten years since I walked barefoot, except to shower.

She didn't say it with sadness.

She said it surprised.

She had never stopped to think about it.

And yet, it was true.

From the time she got up until she went to bed, there was always something between her feet and the ground.

Slippers.

Shoes.

Sandals.

Slippers.

The direct contact with the ground had practically disappeared from her life.

Not because it was prohibited.

Simply because it had stopped being part of her routine.

The ground is much more than a surface

When we think of the ground, we usually imagine a place to rest on.

But for the nervous system, it represents much more.

Every step provides information about the texture.

The temperature.

The incline.

The stability.

The hardness.

The small irregularities.

All that information continuously travels from the receptors in the foot to the brain.

And with it, the organism makes decisions.

How to distribute weight.

How to stabilize the ankle.

How to modify stride length.

How to anticipate the next support.

Walking does not just consist of moving the legs.

It consists of interpreting information.

The foot was designed to perceive.

At times we talk about the foot as if it were just a mechanical structure.

Bones.

Ligaments.

Muscles.

Tendons.

But the foot is also an extraordinary sensory organ.

Thousands of receptors distributed throughout the skin and deep tissues constantly inform the nervous system of what is happening beneath us.

They are not there by chance.

Their function is not just to feel.

It is to help us move better.

Each support modifies the available information.

And each new information allows for adjusting the next movement.

Moving and perceiving are part of the same process.

Silence is also information.

Imagine a conversation.

If one of the people stops talking, communication changes.

It does not disappear.

But it loses richness.

Something similar happens when we reduce certain sensory stimuli for a long time.

The organism continues to function.

Of course.

But it has less information from direct contact with the ground.

No means that the foot stops working.

It means that part of the conversation with the ground becomes more silent.

And the brain, as always, adapts to the information it receives.

Walking barefoot is not a competition.

There is the idea that the longer we walk barefoot, the better.

Not necessarily.

Biology rarely rewards extremes.

Walking barefoot on a beach, in a garden, or inside the house can offer very interesting sensory experiences.

Doing it for hours on surfaces that the body is not yet prepared for can be excessive.

The value is not in eliminating footwear.

It is in recovering moments when the foot can once again converse directly with the environment.

The quantity matters less than the quality of the experience.

What does this have to do with barefoot?

A lot.

Barefoot tries to preserve an important part of that conversation.

It does not exactly reproduce the feeling of walking completely barefoot.

Nor does it intend to.

It protects against cold, sharp objects, or certain environmental conditions.

But, at the same time, it tries to allow some of the information from the ground to continue reaching the nervous system.

It does not replace the experience of walking barefoot.

It brings it closer.

And that difference is important.

Because the goal has never been to eliminate all protection.

It has been maintaining as much communication with the ground as possible without giving up safety when it is needed.

What I see every day in consultation

There is a moment that I particularly like during some assessments.

I ask the patient to take off their shoes.

Not to only explore the shape of the foot.

But to observe how their behavior changes when they make direct contact with the ground again.

Some people step confidently from the very first moment.

Others seem to walk cautiously, as if the ground were an unknown surface.

No reaction is right or wrong.

Both tell a story.

And understanding that story often provides much more information than any static photograph of the foot.

Because movement begins long before the first step.

It starts in the way the brain interprets the terrain.

What you can do starting today

Find a safe place.

At home.

In a garden.

On a quiet beach.

Spend a few minutes walking barefoot without a specific goal.

Don't try to strengthen anything.

Don't think about the technique.

Just pay attention.

How do the temperatures change under your feet?

Which areas make contact first?

Do you notice differences between one foot and the other?

What textures do you recognize without looking?

Sometimes, the best way to learn about movement is to listen before trying to correct it.

The most important idea

For thousands of generations, the foot evolved in direct contact with the ground.

Today we live in a very different environment and footwear serves essential functions of protection, hygiene, and comfort.

It’s not about giving up those advances.

It’s about understanding that occasional contact with the ground remains an extraordinary source of information for the nervous system.

Walking barefoot is not an obligation.

It is not a test.

It is not a philosophy.

It is an opportunity for the organism to regain, even if only for a few minutes, a conversation that has been with us since the origin of our species.

Because movement does not depend solely on the muscles.

It also depends on the quality of the information with which the brain constructs each step.

Think about the last time you walked barefoot on a natural surface.

Do you remember what the ground was like… or do you remember, above all, how it made you feel?
