ARTICLE 26 Biology is never in a hurry

"I have tried for two weeks... and it doesn't work"

It is a conversation that constantly repeats in consultation.

A patient starts an exercise program.

Walks a little more each day.

Starts to strengthen their feet.

Improves their habits.

And, after a few weeks, they arrive disappointed.

—I expected to notice much more change.

Then I ask them a question.

—If you had planted a tree fifteen days ago, would you be worried that it still doesn't provide shade?

The answer is always the same.

Of course not.

Everyone understands that a tree needs time to grow.

However, when we talk about our own body, we expect results that biology has never promised.

Adapting is building

Every improvement that the organism experiences involves building something.

New connections between neurons.

Small changes in the muscles.

Remodeling the bone.

Reorganizing the tendon.

Motor learning.

Greater coordination.

None of that happens overnight.

Adaptation is not about flipping a switch.

It is about accumulating thousands of small modifications that, together, end up producing a visible change.

The body works like a craftsman.

Not like a factory.

The invisible also counts.

There is a curious problem.

We only tend to value what we can see.

If the pain disappears, we think we are better.

If there is still some discomfort, we believe that nothing has changed.

But between those two moments many things usually happen.

Maybe today you have more balance than a month ago.

Maybe you recover better after walking.

Maybe you climb stairs with more confidence.

Maybe your nervous system needs to activate less tension to perform the same movement.

Many adaptations appear long before they become evident.

And, precisely because they are invisible, we tend to stop giving them importance.

Impatience also modifies movement.

When we expect immediate results, something curious happens.

We start to constantly analyze our body.

Every step.

Every discomfort.

Every sensation.

Every little change.

The brain enters a permanent state of evaluation.

And, many times, that vigilance increases frustration.

Recovery stops being a process.

It becomes a daily exam.

But adaptation does not need anxiety.

It needs continuity.

What does this have to do with barefoot?

A lot.

One of the most common reasons for giving up during a transition to barefoot is not pain.

It's the hurry.

Many people expect to notice spectacular changes in a few days.

Or they want to walk long distances too soon.

However, the muscles, tendons, ligaments, and the nervous system need time to reorganize.

Not because they are slow.

But because they are building capacities that, ideally, should accompany us for many years.

Deep adaptations are almost never quick.

And quick ones are rarely deep.

What I see every day in consultation

The strongest recoveries usually have something in common.

They are not the fastest.

They are the most consistent.

Patients who get the best results are rarely those who seek to speed up the process.

They are those who understand that each small step is part of a greater transformation.

They stop asking themselves every morning if they are already healed.

They start to ask themselves if today they are doing something that helps the body to adapt.

That change in mindset usually makes a huge difference.

Because it stops being a struggle against time.

It starts a collaboration with biology.

What you can do from today

The next time you start any change related to your health, try to replace a question.

Instead of thinking:

"When will I notice the result?"

Ask yourself:

"Am I providing my body a reason to keep adapting today?"

If the answer is yes, you are probably already making progress, even if you can't measure it yet.

Consistency almost always leaves traces before the big changes appear.

The body does not reward haste. It rewards intelligent repetition.

The most important idea

We live in a time that values speed.

But the body still obeys the same biological laws it did thousands of years ago.

Learning requires repetition.

Getting stronger requires progressive loading.

Recovering requires rest.

Adapting requires time.

We cannot negotiate those rules.

But we can learn to work with them.

When we stop demanding immediate results, we start to value something much more important.

The direction in which we are changing.

A question to reflect on

Think about the most important change your body has experienced in the last few years.

Did it happen overnight… or was it the result of hundreds of small adaptations that you barely noticed as they happened?
