There is a question that comes up time after time when someone discovers barefoot shoes.
—"But with such a thin sole, don't your feet get cold?"
It's a completely logical doubt.
For years we have been taught that the thicker the sole, the better insulated the foot will be.
More foam.
More protection.
More warmth.
However, the human body does not regulate temperature in such a simple way.
And here it is important to differentiate between two concepts that we often confuse.
Feeling cold.
And being cold.
They do not always mean the same thing.
What science says
The sensation of cold and the actual temperature of the foot are not exactly the same.
Our nervous system detects temperature changes through specialized receptors located in the skin.
That’s why, when we use a thinner sole, we perceive more clearly whether the ground is cold or hot.
But perceiving a temperature does not necessarily mean that the foot is losing more heat.
The temperature of the tissues depends, above all, on blood circulation.
And that circulation is influenced by many factors.
Muscle activity.
Movement.
Ambient temperature.
The humidity.
And even the general state of health of each person.
In other words.
A foot can perfectly notice that the ground is cold and yet maintain a suitable temperature.
Why does this myth arise?
Because our brain tends to mix two distinct sensations.

It's easy to think that you are also feeling colder.
But it doesn't always happen that way.
It's similar to entering the sea.
For the first few seconds the water seems icy.
However, a few minutes later the perception changes even though the temperature of the water remains exactly the same.
The nervous system adapts.
With barefoot it happens something similar.
The greater sensitivity of the foot means we receive more information from the environment.
That doesn't mean the body automatically loses its ability to retain heat.
What I see every day in consultation
As a podiatrist specializing in biomechanics, many people come convinced that a thin sole necessarily means colder feet.
However, when they make a progressive transition, most discover something curious.
During the first few days they perceive the temperature of the ground much more.
But, as the weeks go by, that sensation stops being so noticeable.
Not because the ground has changed.
But because the brain learns to interpret that information normally.
I also observe that many people who report always having cold feet present other factors that explain the problem much better.
Circulatory problems.
Excessively tight footwear that compresses the toes.
Socks that are too tight.
Very little mobility during the day.
Or certain diseases that affect blood flow.
In those cases, the thickness of the sole is rarely the true protagonist.
The idea I would like you to keep in mind
There is a reflection I usually share with my patients.
Feeling more does not mean suffering more.
Barefoot allows the foot to receive more information from the environment.
That includes better noticing the texture of the ground.
The temperature.
The slope.
And the small irregularities of each surface.
But greater sensitivity does not mean worse protection.
On the contrary.
Many times it means that the nervous system is receiving information again that has been filtered for years by several centimeters of foam.
And that information is also part of good biomechanics.
What really keeps a foot warm
There is an idea I like to explain in consultation.
The best heating system for a foot is not in the shoe.
It is inside the body itself.
When we walk, the muscles work.
Circulation increases.
The tissues receive more blood.
And the body helps to maintain its temperature.
Of course, footwear also influences.
The materials.
Wind protection.
Waterproofing.
And good technical socks can make a huge difference.
But reducing the whole problem to the millimeters of the sole would be oversimplifying how the human body works.
What you can do
If you are going to use barefoot in cold weather, choose a model suitable for the season and with materials that protect against wind and moisture.
Use quality socks, preferably made of merino wool or technical fibers with good thermoregulation capacity.
Avoid footwear that compresses the toes. Good circulation needs space for the foot to move naturally.
Stay active whenever you can. A moving foot generates much more heat than a stationary foot.
If you notice your feet are persistently cold, consult a podiatrist to rule out circulatory problems or other medical causes.
Conclusion
Barefoot does not make you feel colder by definition.
What it does is allow your feet to better perceive the environment.
And feeling a temperature does not necessarily mean losing heat.
As a podiatrist specializing in biomechanics, I always try to remember that the human body is much more intelligent than we sometimes think.
It does not regulate temperature solely by the thickness of a sole.
The regulation is thanks to a system complex in which circulation, movement, and the extraordinary capacity of adaptation of the organism intervene.
Because, many times, the greatest change is not in the temperature of the foot.
It is in learning to interpret correctly the sensations that our feet have been trying for years to convey.
And when you understand that difference, you discover that barefoot does not cool your feet.
It simply stops hiding the information that has always been there.
