"I bought some barefoot shoes… and I got injured"
I have heard this phrase many times.
And I always ask the same question.
—How did you make the change?
The answers often seem similar.
"On the first day I walked for several hours."
"I started running with them from the first week."
"Since I felt good, I stopped using my other shoes."
The curious thing is that those same people would never do something similar in other areas.
No one who hasn't trained for years would try to lift double the weight on the first day.
No one would expect to speak a new language fluently after a week.
However, with movement we tend to think that it is enough to decide to change for the body to change with us.
And the organism works differently.
Adapting takes time
Our body is designed to adapt.
That is one of its greatest strengths.
Muscles increase their capacity when they receive an adequate stimulus.
Tendons progressively reorganize their structure.
Bones respond to loads.
The nervous system learns new movement strategies.
But all of those processes have something in common.
They need time.
There is no button that speeds up biology.
Each tissue has its rhythm.
And respecting it is part of the treatment.
The problem is rarely the stimulus.
There is a widely held idea.
When discomfort appears after a change, we tend to blame the change.
But many times the problem is not in the stimulus.
It is in the dose.
Walking barefoot for a few minutes does not impose the same demand as doing it for several hours.
Running one kilometer does not involve the same load as running ten.
The body does not respond only to what we do.
It also responds to how much we do, how often, and with what margin for recovery.
In biomechanics, the dose matters as much as the type of stimulus.
Adapting does not mean suffering.
Sometimes the idea is conveyed that pain is an inevitable part of the adaptation process.
I do not share that view.
It is normal for new sensations to appear.
Fatigue.
Muscle work.
Greater sensation of the foot.
But a well-planned transition should not be based on enduring increasing pain as if it were a test of commitment.
The goal is not to demonstrate endurance.
It is to build capacity.
And building capacity means progressing at a speed that the tissues can follow.
More space can be faster.
It may seem like a contradiction.
However, it is one of the most important lessons I have learned in consultation.
People who progress calmly tend to go further.
Not because they are more prudent.
But because they interrupt the process less.
Those who increase the load too quickly often find themselves forced to stop.
And each prolonged stop breaks part of the adaptation achieved.
In contrast, those who progress gradually maintain a continuity that allows the organism to keep learning.
Patience does not delay progress.
Many times it accelerates it.
What does this have to do with barefoot?
Everything.
Barefoot does not require a perfect foot.
It requires a process of adaptation.
When we reduce some of the support that footwear provided, some tissues begin to work differently.
The muscles of the foot participate more.
The Achilles tendon can take on a greater demand.
The perception of the ground changes.
The nervous system reorganizes movement.
All of that requires practice.
Not because barefoot is dangerous.
But because any significant change needs time to integrate.
The success of a transition does not depend on the first day.
It depends on the following months.
What I see every day in consultation
The best transitions are not usually the fastest.
They are the most consistent.
Patients who start walking for a few minutes.
Who alternate different types of footwear depending on the activity.
Who observe how their body responds.
Who increase the load when the body shows it is ready.
They do not seek to prove anything.
They seek to learn.
And that attitude completely changes the outcome.
Because it stops being a struggle against the body.
It starts a collaboration with it.
What can you do starting today
If you are thinking about making a significant change in your way of walking, running, or using footwear, do something simple.
Do not just plan the beginning.
Plan the progression as well.
Ask yourself:
What small dose can I comfortably repeat for several weeks?
That question is often much more useful than asking how much you are capable of doing today.
Because the body does not improve due to isolated effort.
It improves thanks to the repetition of stimuli it can assimilate.

The most important idea
Barefoot does not injure.
It also does not protect by itself.
What determines the outcome is the relationship between the demands we place and the body's actual capacity to meet them.
When that relationship is balanced, the tissues learn, strengthen, and develop new strategies.
When we demand much more than the body can manage at that moment, discomfort arises.
Not because the organism has failed.
But because we have confused the decision to change with the time needed to adapt.
Biology never responds to our rush.
It responds to the stimuli it can transform into adaptation.
A question to reflect on
Think of any significant change you have achieved in your life.
Learning a language.
Practicing a sport.
Recovering from an injury.
Creating a habit.
Was it the first day that brought about the change… or were all the little days that came after?
Perhaps the body learns exactly the same way.
