"Does it really matter that the toes have more space?"
A few months ago, a patient showed me some new sneakers.
He was satisfied with the purchase.
They were light.
Comfortable.
With good cushioning.
While we were talking, I asked him to take them off.
I observed his feet.
The toes remained very close together even when barefoot.
Then I asked him a question.
—Can you separate your toes without help?
He tried several times.
He smiled with some resignation.
—I had never tried.
And that answer made me think of something that happens very often.
We worry about the engine of a car, about the suspension or the tires.
But we forget to look at the only part of the foot that comes into contact with the ground just before we propel ourselves into the next step.
The toes.
The toes are not there by chance.
If we look at the anatomy of the foot, it is hard to think that the toes are a secondary element.
Each one provides stability.
They participate in balance.
They help distribute loads.
They contribute to propulsion.
And provides constant information about the ground.
They are not a ornament at the end of the foot.
They are an active part of the movement.
Every step ends up relying on them and, at the same time, begins thanks to them.
More space means more possibilities.
Imagine that you try to write holding a pen with your completely motionless fingers.
You could do it.
But you would lose precision.
Now think about the foot.
When the fingers have enough space, they can open slightly, adapt to the ground, and participate more naturally in the control of balance and propulsion.
It does not mean that a foot will function perfectly just by having a wide shape.
But it does mean that it has more possibilities to do so.
And, as we have already learned, the health of movement largely depends on the number of options available.
The body adapts… also to footwear.
Here an important idea appears.
The foot is extraordinarily adaptable.
If for years it remains in a confined space, it will end up organizing itself around that reality.
Soft tissues change.
The muscles modify their behavior.
The way of supporting can also transform.
That does not mean that the foot is "damaged."
It means that it has done what it always does.
Adapt.
The question is different.
Is that adaptation still useful for the life we lead today?
Form and function influence each other
In previous chapters we said that form matters less than function.
And it is still true.
But it is also true that function, repeated over the years, ends up shaping form.
A foot that can freely use its toes tends to maintain a different architecture than a foot that rarely has that space.
Not because there is a perfect design.
But because tissues respond to the demands they receive.
Form and function maintain a continuous dialogue.
Neither completely commands the other.
What does this have to do with barefoot?
A lot.
One of the most representative characteristics of minimalist footwear is its anatomical shape.
Not because having more open toes is an aesthetic goal.
But because that space allows the foot to use resources it already has.
It does not force the toes apart.
It simply stops preventing it.
And that difference is important.
Barefoot does not create a new function.
It allows expressing a function that, in many cases, had been limited for a long time.
However, having space does not guarantee that the body knows how to take advantage of it from day one.
Like any other ability, it also needs practice and adaptation.
What I see every day in consultation
When a person starts to use shoes with a wider last, they usually talk about comfort.
But, as weeks go by, different comments arise.
—I feel my foot more relaxed.
—I have the feeling that I support differently.
—I notice that the toes participate more when walking.
It doesn't always happen the same way.
Each organism has its own story.
But those phrases reflect something interesting.
Before changing the strength, perception often changes first.
And when perception changes, the nervous system starts to explore new movement strategies.
What you can do starting today
Do a very simple experiment.
Barefoot, observe your feet while standing.
See if your toes rest naturally or if they seem to be searching for space.
Then try to separate them slightly without excessive force.
It doesn't matter how much you manage to move them.
The important thing is to discover if they actively participate in your balance or if they have been spectators for so long that they barely remember how to intervene.
Observing is already a way to learn.
And the body learns every time we pay attention to what it does.

A wide last does not automatically improve biomechanics, but it offers the foot the opportunity to use functions for which it was designed.
The most important idea
The toes are part of the body's balance, perception, and propulsion system.
When there is space, the body retains more possibilities to adapt to the demands of movement.
That does not mean that all people need the same type of last nor that a change of footwear alone solves a problem.
It means something simpler and, at the same time, deeper.
The body makes better use of what it has the possibility to use.
And permanently limiting the space of the toes means reducing part of the repertoire with which the body can relate to the ground.
A question to reflect on
Think about the footwear you are wearing right now.
Are your toes occupying the space they need to participate in the movement… or are they simply learning to adapt to the space you have given them?

It can also accompany the movement… or perform part of the work that the foot itself was prepared to do.
Because the flexibility of a shoe does not only change its shape.
It changes how much of the movement belongs to the footwear and how much still belongs to the foot.
