"They are just some sneakers"

A few years ago a patient told me a phrase that I still remember.

—In the end, they are just some sneakers.

He said it with total naturalness.

As if the footwear were merely a layer of material located beneath the foot.

I responded with another question.

—What if instead of sneakers they were glasses?

He looked at me surprised.

I continued.

Glasses do not change the world.

They change the information that reaches your eyes.

And that information modifies the way you interact with the environment.

With footwear, something similar happens.

The ground remains the same.

But the information that reaches the nervous system is no longer the same.

The brain never touches the ground.

There is a fascinating idea.

Our brain does not know what the terrain we walk on is really like.

It never comes directly into contact with it.

Everything it knows about the ground comes through millions of receptors distributed across the skin, joints, muscles, and tendons of the foot.

Those receptors transform pressure, vibration, temperature, texture, and small changes in load into nerve impulses.

Then the brain interprets that information.

And make decisions.

Each step depends on that conversation.

Footwear acts as a filter

Imagine that you're listening to a song with high-quality headphones.

Now listen to it with headphones that eliminate part of the frequencies.

The song remains the same.

But the experience changes.

With footwear, something similar happens.

Depending on its materials, thickness, stiffness, or design, part of the information coming from the ground arrives more clearly while another is muted.

It does not mean that one filter is always better than another.

It means that the brain is making decisions with different information.

And that difference modifies movement.

More information does not always mean better

Here an important nuance appears.

It might seem that the more information the organism receives, the better.

But it is not always the case.

Imagine walking barefoot on a path full of sharp stones.

In that context, a protective sole can allow the body to move with greater safety and less stress on the tissues.

Now imagine staying all day on a smooth, even, and predictable surface.

Perhaps an excess of filtering reduces stimuli that could help keep the foot's perception active.

There is no ideal amount of information valid for all people and all situations.

There is a balance between protection and perception.

And that equilibrium changes depending on the context.

The brain adapts movement to what it perceives.

If the terrain seems stable, the body tends to relax.

The movements are more fluid.

The muscles work with less tension.

If the terrain conveys uncertainty, the organism responds in a different way.

Increases vigilance.

Increases stiffness.

Reduces speed.

Extends the support time.

All of this happens even before a problem arises.

We do not react only to what happens.

We move according to what the brain expects might happen.

And that expectation depends largely on the information it receives.

What does this have to do with barefoot?

Practically everything.

The biggest difference between conventional footwear and minimalist footwear is not only in weight, drop, or flexibility.

It lies in the amount and type of information that can reach the organism.

Minimalist footwear usually allows the foot to perceive more clearly the irregularities of the terrain, changes in pressure, and the variations in support.

That does not automatically make the movement better.

But it does provide the nervous system with a different opportunity to organize it.

As long as the organism is prepared to manage that information.

Because receiving more stimuli without the ability to interpret them can also generate uncertainty.

That is why an intelligent transition is, above all, a transition of the nervous system.

What I see every day in consultation

There are patients who change their shoes expecting to feel a difference only in comfort.

And yet, the first thing they describe is usually something else.

—I notice the floor in a different way.

That phrase is particularly interesting to me.

Because before talking about muscles or joints, they are already talking about perception.

And perception is the first step of movement.

Before there is a stride, a support, or a push, there is information.

All biomechanics begins there.

What you can do starting today

The next time you put on different footwear, don’t just think about whether it is more comfortable.

Make a more curious observation.

How does the sensation of the ground change?

Do you notice the irregularities more?

Do you feel more stable or more insecure?

Does your way of walking change without you trying to modify it?

Those answers will help you understand that a shoe does not only change the foot.

It also changes the conversation between the organism and the environment.

Footwear modifies movement because it first modifies the information with which the brain constructs that movement.

The most important idea

No shoe moves the body by itself.

What it does is change part of the information that reaches the nervous system.

Based on that information, the brain organizes new strategies for equilibrium, stability, drive, and adaptation.

That’s why two people can react completely differently to the same footwear.

It doesn’t depend solely on the shoe.

It depends on the organism that interprets the information that the shoe provides.

The true protagonist remains the nervous system.

Footwear only participates in the conversation.

A question to reflect on

Think about the last pair of shoes that really surprised you.

Did what changed was solely the comfort… or also the way you perceived the ground and moved on it?
