There is a question that comes up over and over in consultations.
—"And the knees? Won't they suffer more with such a thin sole?"
It’s a completely logical concern.
For years we have associated the protection of the knees with a very simple idea.
The more cushioning.
More protection.
Less wear.
But the human body does not function like a sum of independent parts.
It works as a system in which each joint influences the others.
And, precisely for that reason, the answer does not depend solely on footwear.
What science says
The knees bear thousands of loads every day.
When walking.
When climbing stairs.
When getting up from a chair.
When running.
However, those loads do not depend solely on the impact against the ground.
Muscle strength also influences.
Ankle mobility.
The function of the foot.
Hip coordination.
Walking speed.
And the way the whole body distributes movement.
The available scientific evidence does not show that the use of minimalist footwear causes greater wear on the knees by itself.
In fact, various studies have observed that footwear can modify the support pattern and the distribution of loads throughout the entire lower extremity.
That doesn't mean that barefoot is better for everyone.
It means that the relationship between footwear and the knee is much more complex than we usually imagine.
Why do we believe that barefoot can harm the knees?
Because for decades we have received the same message.
If the impact decreases, the knee will suffer less.
It seems like common sense.
But the body does not function like a rigid structure.
When the footwear changes, so does the way of walking.
The body modifies the length of the stride.
The speed at which we land.
The muscular activity.
The position of the ankle.
The way the foot contacts the ground.
The knees do not "read" the label of the shoe.
They respond to the movement that generates the whole body.
And that difference completely changes how we understand this myth.
What I see every day in consultation
As a podiatrist specializing in biomechanics, many people come in convinced that the source of their pain is solely in the shoes.
However, when we conduct a biomechanical study, we rarely find a single cause.
Frequently, several factors appear to be working at the same time.
A limitation of mobility in the ankle.
An inefficient hip musculature.
A foot that barely participates in the support.
A sudden increase in training.
Or a way of walking that makes certain structures bear more load than necessary.
In those cases, changing shoes can modify some sensations.
But it rarely solves the problem by itself.
Because knee pain almost never depends solely on what we wear.
The idea I would like you to keep in mind
There is a reflection I repeat many times in consultation.
Knees do not live in isolation. They are part of a chain of movement that starts at the foot and continues to the hip.
When one of those links stops functioning properly, the others try to compensate.
That’s why, as a podiatrist, I am not only interested in observing a knee.
I am interested in understanding how the whole person moves.
Joints do not need to stop receiving load.
They need to learn to distribute it in an efficient way.
And that difference changes everything.
What you can do
If you have knee pain, evit to draw conclusions based solely on the type of footwear.
If you want to start with barefoot, make a gradual transition to allow the entire musculoskeletal system to adapt.
Work on the strength of the muscles in the foot, leg, and hip. The estability of the knee depends on much more than the joint itself.
Maintain a good mobility of the ankle and foot. Both directly influence how loads are distributed during walking.
If the discomfort persists, consult a podiatrist and conduct a biomechanical study to identify which factors are affecting your walking style.
Conclusion
Barefoot does not wear out the knees.
What can overload them is an inefficient biomechanics, an adaptation that is too rapid, or loads that the body is not yet prepared to manage.
As a podiatrist specializing in biomechanics, I am skeptical of explanations that seek a single culprit for such a complex problem.
The knees do not depend exclusively on footwear.
They depend on how the feet, ankles, muscles, and the rest of the body work in each step.
My job is not to tell you which shoes you should buy.
It is to help you understand how your body moves so that your joints can do what they were designed for.
Because taking care of the knees does not start by adding more foam under the feet.
It starts by understanding that each step is the result of a coordinated movement of the whole body.
And when you understand that idea, you stop looking for isolated solutions and start taking care of biomechanics as the extraordinary system that it truly is.
