ARTICLE 55. The biggest mistake almost everyone makes when starting with barefoot

The illusion lasted exactly three days

I had read articles, watched videos, and heard experiences from people who claimed to have discovered a new way of walking. I was convinced that I had found the perfect footwear.

So I made a decision that, at first glance, seemed logical.

I stored all my usual sneakers in a closet and started using only barefoot footwear.

At work.

On walks.

For training.

Even for grocery shopping.

The first feeling was good.

Everything felt more natural.

But barely a week later the discomfort began.

First it was the calves.

Then the Achilles tendon.

Later, small aches appeared in the sole of the foot.

And the conclusion came quickly.

"Barefoot is not for me."

The curious thing is that this scene repeats itself very frequently in consultations.

And it almost always happens for the same reason.

Not because barefoot is good or bad.

But because the body needs time to adapt to any significant change.

If something similar has happened to you, you are not alone.

If you have recently started with barefoot footwear and discomfort has appeared, you have probably asked yourself some of these questions.

"Could it be that these shoes are not suitable?"

"Is my foot not meant for this?"

"Could I have injured myself?"

These are completely normal doubts.

But many times they stem from a wrong idea.

We think that changing footwear is simply changing shoes.

From a biomechanical perspective, it is not.

In many cases, it means changing the way the body receives information from the ground, distributes loads, and uses muscles that have been working differently for years.

And that never happens overnight.

The real mistake is not in barefoot.

After many years analyzing the walking patterns of hundreds of people, I have come to a conclusion that may surprise you.

The most common mistake is not to start with barefoot.

The mistake is wanting the body to change at the same pace as our illusion..

When we discover something we believe is beneficial, we want to reap its benefits as soon as possible.

It is a very human reaction.

If we think that a type of diet is better, we change our diet overnight.

If we start a sport, we want to train every day.

And if we discover barefoot, many people feel the need to use it for everything from the very first moment.

The problem is that enthusiasm does not change the adaptability of the tissues.

The muscles, the tendons, the ligaments, and the nervous system have their own times.

And those times cannot be accelerated.

Your body has been learning a way to move for years.

There is something we rarely take into account.

We don't start the transition with a "new" body.

We start with a body that has been learning for decades.

Every step you have taken since you were a child has been building movement patterns.

Your brain has learned what is the most efficient way to walk with the shoes you have worn for years.

Your muscles have adapted.

Your tendons have too.

Even the way you distribute weight while walking is part of an automatic learning.

That’s why changing shoes can mean much more than just changing a sole.

It can mean asking the body to reorganize strategies it has been using for a long time.

And that requires patience.

The adaptation does not occur only in the feet.

One of the most common mistakes is to think that the transition only affects the foot.

In reality, the whole body participates.

The calves may work in a different way.

The Achilles tendon may receive a different load.

The muscles of the foot may start to engage more actively.

Ankle mobility becomes more important.

Even the knee, the hip, or the pelvis may slightly modify their behavior to adapt to the new situation.

That’s why some people feel discomfort far from the foot during the first weeks.

It doesn’t necessarily mean that there is an injury.

It means that the system is reorganizing.

The key is to distinguish a normal adaptation from an overload.

And that’s where progression makes the difference.

What I see every week in consultation

There is a pattern that repeats over and over again.

Most people who have problems when starting with barefoot have not made a bad choice of shoes.

They have made a much simpler mistake.

They have wanted to run before learning to walk.

They change all their footwear the same day.

They start walking long distances.

They increase physical activity.

And they expect the body to respond just like the motivation.

But the body doesn’t work that way.

Adaptation is a constant negotiation between the stimulus the body receives and its ability to respond to that stimulus.

When the balance is broken, discomfort appears.

Not because the change is wrong.

But because it has come too quickly.

The difference between adaptation and overload

This is one of the questions I receive the most.

"Is it normal for discomfort to appear?"

The answer, as is often the case in biomechanics, is that it depends.

It is relatively common to notice that certain muscles are working more.

It is possible to feel some fatigue in areas that we barely perceived before.

That may be part of the adaptation process.

What we should not normalize is intense, increasing pain or pain that changes our way of walking.

The body has many ways to warn us.

The question is learning to interpret them.

Listening to the body does not mean being afraid.

It means paying attention before a small warning becomes a bigger problem.

Barefoot is not in a hurry

We live in a society used to immediate results.

We want to progress quickly.

We want to improve quickly.

We want to change quickly.

However, physiology does not understand hurry.

Tissues need time to strengthen.

The nervous system needs time to learn new movement patterns.

Balance needs repetition.

Coordination needs practice.

And all of that happens while walking.

Step by step.

There is no shortcut.

What would I do if I started today from scratch

If I had to start my own transition to barefoot today, I would do something very simple.

I would not change all my shoes on the first day.

I would start incorporating it in specific situations and for short periods.

I would observe how my body responds.

I would increase the usage time only when the adaptation was good.

I would continue using other types of footwear when the activity required it.

And, above all, I would understand that the goal is not to go barefoot as soon as possible.

The goal is for my body to learn to move better.

The transition is not a competition.

There are no prizes for arriving first.

The idea I would like you to remember

There is a phrase I often repeat in consultation because it summarizes this process very well.

The body always adapts. The question is whether we give it time to do it well.

When we respect the times of adaptation, the body usually responds extraordinarily.

When we try to impose our rhythm on the body, compensations appear.

And sustained compensations end up taking a toll.

An error that has a solution

The good news is that this error is also the easiest to correct.

There is no need to start over.

There is no need to abandon the barefoot.

In most cases, it is enough to reduce the load, review the process, and gradually move forward.

Because the problem is almost never in the direction you have chosen.

It is in the speed with which you try to travel the path.

Conclusion

After many years observing how my patients walk, there is something I am very clear about.

Barefoot does not transform the feet by itself.

What transforms the body is an intelligent, progressive, and respectful adaptation process with its own capacity for change.

That's why, if you're just starting, my advice is not to walk more.

Nor to change all your shoes.

My advice is much more simple.

Give your body time to learn.

Because major changes in biomechanics rarely happen overnight.

They happen after thousands of small steps taken in the right direction.

And I would like to end with an idea that perfectly summarizes the philosophy of this blog:

"My job is not to convince you to use barefoot. It is to help you understand how your body works so you can decide with criteria."
